“KUCHING, May 14 — The Magistrates’ Court here today fined a man RM5,000 in default five months’ jail for punching a passenger, spitting on a flight crew member, and causing a disturbance on board an aircraft. Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali meted out the sentence on Mohd Izzan Mohd Hashim, 36, after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Regulation 102 of the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016. The offence, punishable under Regulation 206(2)(A) of the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016, carries a fine of up to RM25,000 or imprisonment for up to one year, or both, upon conviction. According to the charge, the man behaved inappropriately towards the flight crew by continuously preventing them from carrying out their duties. He committed the offence at around 6.25pm while on a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching on April 22. Based on the facts of the case, an aviation security officer working at Kuching International Airport (KIA) received instructions from the airline’s station manager to be on standby at KIA’s Gate 5. This followed reports of an aggressive male passenger on board the flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching, which was scheduled to arrive at 6.50pm. Upon arrival, Mohd Izzan was handed over to the police for re-arrest and further action. Police investigations found witnesses stating that Mohd Izzan acted aggressively while on board the aircraft by punching a passenger in the face, spitting on a flight crew member, and causing a disturbance. The actions were feared to have endangered the lives of other passengers on the aircraft and affected flight safety. It is understood that he was under the influence of alcohol during the incident.
