AirBorneo eyes direct international flights to Miri, plus stronger links across Sarawak cities
KUCHING, May 14 — AirBorneo is evaluating direct international flight routes to Miri while also planning to strengthen connectivity between Sarawak’s major cities, said Datuk Dr Jerip Susil. The Deputy Minister of Transport said the Sarawak government remained committed to enhancing international air connectivity. He said the state government is actively engaging with airline operators in collaboration with Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), and other relevant agencies to facilitate the exploration of new international routes into Sarawak based on commercial viability and market demand. “In addition, the Sarawak government, through AirBorneo, is evaluating opportunities for direct international routes to Sarawak, particularly within Asean and nearby regional markets,” he said. Dr Jerip added AirBorneo is also evaluating commercial routes connecting Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri as part of efforts to strengthen accessibility and economic integration within the state. “Subject to aircraft availability and commercial viability, these routes are expected to commence from the third quarter of 2027 onwards,” he said in response to Adam Yii (GPS-Pujut), during the question-and-answer session in the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) on Thursday. In response to Yii’s supplementary question on incentives for airlines to introduce new international routes, Dr Jerip said support is currently provided through a collaborative approach involving MAHB, Tourism Malaysia, and STB. “These incentives generally include route development support such as airport charge rebates, joint marketing, and promotional assistance, as well as other facilitation measures to encourage airlines to commence and sustain new international routes,” he explained. — The Borneo Post
