Bersatu details failed talks with PAS over Negeri Sembilan political crisis
KUALA LUMPUR, May 24 — Bersatu has given details of discussions with PAS over the political situation in Negeri Sembilan, saying its attempts to coordinate a joint position were not responded to by the Islamist party. In a lengthy public statement on Facebook posted tonight, the Bersatu political bureau said talks involved efforts to manage cooperation among Perikatan Nasional (PN) assemblymen and their relationship with Umno representatives in the state government. The Bersatu politburo said its leadership made several attempts to engage PAS between late April and early May 2026 to discuss the matter. It said there was no response from PAS during that period despite repeated efforts to arrange discussions. Between April 28 and May 5, 2026, PAS did not respond to Bersatu’s proposals, the politbiro said. Bersatu said the discussions were linked to shifting political alignments in the state, following Umno’s decision to remain part of the Pakatan Harapan-led state government. It added that PN leaders had initially considered cooperation between their assemblymen and Umno representatives to ensure political stability in Negeri Sembilan. The matter was later brought to the PN supreme council meeting on May 16, 2026, where Bersatu said its explanation was noted. The politbiro said that all action taken were part of coalition-level discussions and rejected claims that it acted unilaterally.
