Coachella’s too pricey? Here are 4 budget-friendlier American music festivals
Seek the most budget-friendly American music festivals, and Coachella will be nowhere in sight. The average celebrity flies out on their private jet and sets up for the weekend in a mansion before strolling into their VIP spot. The average influencer probably has it best. Their entire trip is typically paid for by the brand they’re promoting, complete with gifting suites and free luxury products. For the average person — no celebrity, no socialite, no influencer — it’s cramped tents in the heat, long queues for showers you may never reach, and dusty trails on hiked-up food prices in crowded fields. That’s not to say attending Coachella isn’t worth it. You’re paying at least US$549 for general admission to see a multi-genre lineup of artists give the best performances of their lives. Coachella is the hallmark music festival, and no one’s wasting a sweat. This year’s lineup included Sabrina Carpenter , Justin Bieber, The Strokes, Alex G, Katseye, and more. It’s all part of that experience; the camping, the crowds, the drunkenness — that of which many people step into willingly, with a smile on their face. Still, both things can be true at once. For many international students, spending money on a large-scale festival like Coachella simply isn’t an option. Aside from the cost of the actual ticket, you’re having to cover accommodation or on-site camps, service fees, transportation, festival food and meals, all of which can surpass thousands of dollars. So, if you’re looking for budget-friendly American music festivals as an alternative to the hallmarks, we’ve got a few options for you — though fair warning, some are pretty niche. Here are 4 budget-friendly American music festivals that will break the bank a little less than Coachella View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kilby Block Party (@kilbyblockparty) Kilby Block Party (Salt Lake City, Utah) Dates: You’ve passed the 2026 dates, but you can start saving up for ‘27! Check out ticket prices from 2026 here. Do you love indie, alternative artists that aren’t as frequently talked about on mainstream media sites? Okay, while the Kilby Block Party this year did feature very mainstream names like Lorde and Hayley Williams, the rest of the lineup remained true to every indie-lover’s dream: Father John Misty, Lucy Dacus, Blood Orange, Snail Mail, and more. This year, the festival expanded in size at the Utah State Fairpark, and changed stage setups to lessen audio bleed. “There isn’t a better major festival in the US, even if Salt Lake City leaves a lot to be desired as a visitor,” a Reddit user writes. “Good crowds, it’s generally well-run, and the lineup feels like it has some curation instead of CAA and Wasserman dictating the lineup.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Elements Music & Arts Festival (@elementsfestival) Elements Festival (Lond Pong, Pennsylvania) Dates: Aug. 7-9, 2026 Check out ticket prices here. Dubstep, techno, house, drum and bass; if you need a heavy beat to go with melody, then you’ll find the most psychedelic of experiences at Elements Festival, held at the Pocono Raceway. As you get lost in the winding forests, you’ll discover stages designed to resemble the — you guessed it — four elements, with neon lighting and immersive art installations that turn the festival otherworldly. The 2026 lineup features artists like Above & Beyond, Charlotte De Witte, Atliens, and more. “The universe provided, delivering a sensational affair that could only happen at Elements,” a ‘25 attendee wrote on EDM Identity. “From skydivers at sunset to a gleaming shooting star overhead during Liquid Stranger’s set, the weekend was packed with pinch-me moments that I’ll carry with me forever. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hinterland Music Festival (@hinterlandiowa) Hinterland Music Festival (St. Charles, Iowa) Dates: July 30 – Aug. 2, 2026 Check out ticket prices here. If you’re looking for a more affordable, mainstream festival, Hinterland in St. Charles, Iowa, is your guy. This year’s Hinterland features Katseye, Lorde, Mumford & Sons, Kali Uchis, MUNA, and more, so you’re really getting a bang for your buck out of this year’s multi-genre lineup. Unlike Coachella, the festival is held on a single stage with views of the rolling hills, so it’s a good opportunity to bask in nature too. A 2023 attendee who’d skipped Lollapalooza Chicago on the same weekend wrote: “The food and drinks at Hinterland felt affordable for a music event, with basic cocktails going for US$11. After spending US$110 on six hard seltzers at Taylor Swift’s Eras tour a few months ago, I was especially thankful for reasonable prices.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Pickathon (@pickathon) Pickathon Music Festival (Pendarvis Farm, Oregon) Dates: July 30 – Aug. 2, 2026 Check out ticket prices from here. Even more so than Kilby Block Party, Pickathon isn’t meant for those who love mainstream music. In fact, Travel Portland writes that it’s okay if you don’t know most of the acts playing, because it’s more about discovering new indie, rock, and rap artists as opposed to catching up with old loves. This year, you’ve got artists like Alela Diane, Clinton Fearon, Ana Frango Elétrico, and more performing in mystical, boutique forest stages in Pendarvis Farm. “You know, that collective ‘power of music festivals’ that people talk about when trying to sell you on the experience? It was all totally there at Pickathon,” an attendee wrote on Paste. “An intentional festival community, yet one without the hokey-ness common at transformational fests in the Burning Man ilk.”
