“KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 — DAP today pledged its support for the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 on the separation of the roles of the Attorney General (AG) and Public Prosecutor (PP), which has been finalised by the Parliamentary Special Select Committee. Secretary-general Anthony Loke said the matter was among the decisions made by the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) at its meeting last night. The Bill is scheduled to be tabled during the Dewan Rakyat sitting beginning June 2. “DAP is committed to securing the support of all its 40 Members of Parliament in the division vote and calls on all MPs to ensure that this historic constitutional amendment becomes a reality,” he said in a statement today. Loke, who is also the Transport Minister, said DAP remains committed to supporting the institutional reform agenda pursued by the MADANI Government. On May 5, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said separating the roles of the AG and PP would help ensure a more independent prosecution institution, strengthen accountability and enable the AG to be held directly accountable in Parliament without relying on responses delivered through a minister. She said the move would also enhance the transparency of the country’s legal system, as the AG would no longer be represented by another party during question-and-answer sessions in the Dewan Rakyat, thereby strengthening institutional checks and balances. On March 3, the Dewan Rakyat agreed to refer the Bill to the Parliamentary Special Select Committee, chaired by Azalina and comprising 11 MPs from both the government and opposition blocs, to allow relevant stakeholders to further scrutinise and refine the proposed legislation. — Bernama
