Egypt, Kenya stress Nile water security and push to activate strategic partnership at Nairobi summit
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Kenyan President William Ruto affirmed the need for cooperation among Nile Basin countries to safeguard mutual water security and pledged to activate a comprehensive strategic partnership, the Egyptian presidency said on Tuesday. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Africa-France summit in Nairobi, where they discussed bilateral integration, water resources, and the ongoing conflict in Sudan. During the meeting, Sisi expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and hospitality characterising Kenya and its people, noting Egypt’s pride in its historic and firm relations with Kenya at both the official and popular levels. He expressed a desire to activate the joint presidential declaration signed in January 2025, which elevates bilateral relations to a “comprehensive strategic partnership.” This partnership aims to enhance economic integration and allow both nations to mutually benefit from their substantial economic potential, strategic locations, and young human wealth, according to a statement by the official spokesman for the Egyptian presidency, Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy. In response, Ruto expressed his deep appreciation for Al-Sisi’s active participation in the summit. He praised the strategic relations between the two countries and the support Egypt provides for development efforts in Kenya and other Nile Basin nations. Addressing water resources, Al-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s permanent commitment to enhancing cooperation with Kenya and Nile Basin countries in developing water resources to achieve mutual benefit, ensuring no harm is done to the interests and water security of any state. Al-Sisi commended the distinct consultation between the two nations to prioritise cooperation and mutual interest and to avoid division. Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s support for boosting consultation and coordination among basin countries to serve their peoples’ interests and strengthen economic ties between them, El-Shennawy added. The meeting also covered regional issues, primarily the situation in Sudan. Al-Sisi emphasised Egypt’s firm stance in supporting Sudan’s stability, sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. He stressed the necessity of concerted international and regional efforts, particularly from direct neighbours, to play constructive roles in restoring stability and avoiding the exacerbation of security and humanitarian conditions. Furthermore, Al-Sisi reviewed Egypt’s efforts aimed at restoring regional security and stability, outlining a vision that calls for directing resources toward development and fulfilling peoples’ aspirations for security and prosperity, rather than draining state resources in armed conflicts. Ruto expressed his appreciation for this vision, affirming Kenya’s keenness to continue coordinating with Egypt to achieve peace and stability in Africa and the Middle East. The two presidents agreed to enhance joint consultation and coordination in the upcoming period.
