Egypt to roll out Newborn Care Pathway nationwide on June 1

Services for newborns in the first week will include comprehensive medical examinations, growth monitoring, hearing screening, and heel-prick blood tests for inherited diseases and metabolic disorders. The programme will also provide early jaundice screening and routine vaccinations, including the zero-dose polio vaccine, hepatitis B vaccine, and BCG vaccine against tuberculosis. For mothers, services will cover postnatal follow-up, breastfeeding support and counselling, awareness of warning signs affecting mothers and infants, and guidance on birth spacing. Deputy Health Minister for Primary Healthcare and Family Development Abla Al-Alfi noted that primary healthcare facilities remained fully operational during the Eid al-Adha holiday, delivering more than 46,000 medical services over four days, including thyroid screening, newborn hearing tests, dental care, and family development services. She said this helped ease pressure on hospitals and improve access to care closer to patients’ homes. Al-Alfi described the launch of the Newborn Care Pathway as a strategic step toward building an integrated healthcare system that begins from a child’s first day of life and ensures continuity of care through the Healthy Life Course approach.
