In February and March 2025, Egyptian pumpkin accounted for more than half of Italy’s total pumpkin imports, highlighting Italy’s growing reliance on Egyptian supplies. Egypt has strengthened its position as a key pumpkin supplier to the Italian market, with its market share rising from 14% in 2022 to 26% in 2024, before jumping to 46% during the first eight months of 2025. Although Italy ranks among the world’s top 10 pumpkin producers, it has continued to increase imports in recent years due to rising consumer demand and lower domestic output caused by climate fluctuations. Italy imported around 18,000 tonnes of pumpkin in 2024, a record level. Imports had already reached 17,000 tonnes in the first eight months of 2025, suggesting that a new annual record could be set by the end of the year. Alongside Egypt, Italy’s main pumpkin suppliers include South Africa, France, Spain, and the Netherlands. The Italian market imported pumpkins from 24 countries between January and August 2025.
