Egyptian pumpkin exports hit record high as shipments to Italy surge
Egypt has continued to strengthen its presence in Italy’s pumpkin market, achieving record export levels for the third consecutive year as European demand rises amid weaker local production caused by climate challenges. Egypt exported more than 8,000 tonnes of pumpkin to Italy between January and August 2025, worth nearly $5m, marking the highest level ever recorded, according to data from EastFruit. The volume exported to Italy during the first eight months of 2025 was around three times higher than Egypt’s shipments in 2023 and more than four times the levels recorded in 2022. It also exceeded the previous record set in 2024 by 73%. Egyptian pumpkin exports to Italy posted an average annual growth rate of 62% over the past three years, reflecting the rapid expansion of Egyptian produce in European markets. Italy is currently the sixth-largest destination for Egyptian pumpkin exports, accounting for more than 6% of Egypt’s total pumpkin exports over the past two years. Egyptian shipments are usually concentrated between January and June, coinciding with the peak import season in Italy. The period between late winter and early spring typically sees the highest supply levels. In February and March 2025, Egyptian pumpkin accounted for more than half of Italy’s total pumpkin imports, highlighting Italy’s growing reliance on Egyptian supplies. Egypt has strengthened its position as a key pumpkin supplier to the Italian market, with its market share rising from 14% in 2022 to 26% in 2024, before jumping to 46% during the first eight months of 2025. Although Italy ranks among the world’s top 10 pumpkin producers, it has continued to increase imports in recent years due to rising consumer demand and lower domestic output caused by climate fluctuations. Italy imported around 18,000 tonnes of pumpkin in 2024, a record level. Imports had already reached 17,000 tonnes in the first eight months of 2025, suggesting that a new annual record could be set by the end of the year. Alongside Egypt, Italy’s main pumpkin suppliers include South Africa, France, Spain, and the Netherlands. The Italian market imported pumpkins from 24 countries between January and August 2025.
