Fahmi: Pig farming in Selangor can continue under tighter rules, away from residential areas and waterways
KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 – The federal government has taken the position that pig farming in Selangor may continue, but only under tighter restrictions. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said during his weekly press conference that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had already briefed the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, on the matter and also held discussions with Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. “The Federal Government takes the stance that any pig farming areas may only be implemented in new locations situated far from residential areas or critical sources such as waterways and rivers. “They also must utilise high technology capable of managing waste and pollution issues effectively,” Fahmi said, adding that the matter was announced by Anwar during the Cabinet meeting today. Previously, the Selangor government had planned to centralise the state’s pig farming industry in Bukit Tagar, Hulu Selangor, but the plan was cancelled following strong opposition to the project. Sultan Sharafuddin had called for a complete end to pig farming in the state, citing its negative environmental impact. The pig farming debate was reignited last month after Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki suggested adopting a modern, closed-house farming system, drawing sharp criticism from those who claimed the suggestion contradicted the Sultan’s decree.
