Five-month-old boy killed after drug-positive lorry driver crashes in Perodua Myvi on Baling road
BALING, May 8 — A five-month-old baby boy in Kedah was killed while his parents were injured in a collision with a lorry driven by a man who tested positive for drugs. The crash happened at about 10.30pm yesterday in front of the Kampung Sadek junction along Jalan Baru Kulim/Baling/Gerik, local Malay daily BH reported today. The family’s Perodua Myvi was travelling from Kelantan to Penang when it collided with the lorry. Baling district police chief Superintendent Brandon Richard Joe said the infant was pronounced dead at Baling Hospital’s emergency ward. He said the child’s father, 27, and mother, 41, are receiving treatment at the same hospital. Police arrested the 43-year-old lorry driver after his initial urine screening returned positive for drugs. The suspect is under a four-day to assist investigations under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death while driving under the influence. Those found guilty face a jail sentence of 10 to 15 years, fines between RM50,000 and RM100,000, and can be disqualified from holding a driving licence for at least 10 years. The baby’s body has been sent to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for post-mortem.
