Goldsmiths, University of London: Empowering students to think differently
Some universities teach students what to think. Others teach them how. Then there are the rare ones that go further, encouraging them to question, create and find their own voice. For students who want to shape their own path, that difference matters. Goldsmiths, University of London , is one of those places. Ranked among the top 10 universities in London by The Complete University Guide League Tables 2025, it has built a reputation less on following convention than on challenging it. Founded in 1891 and part of the University of London for over 120 years, the university is built around a simple idea: that students learn best when they get to think for themselves and develop a genuine point of view. That philosophy runs through every undergraduate programme and conversation on campus. “My time studying BA Curating at Goldsmiths was both grounding and eye-opening,” says Yery Chung , who graduated in 2021. “What I enjoyed most was the freedom to think critically and experiment. There was no single right way to approach curating, and that pushed me to develop my own voice and perspective.” Goldsmiths, University of London, has been educating students on its campus for more than 200 years. You’ll be pushed to interrogate existing ideas by questioning assumptions and arrive at your own conclusions. On the BA Curating programme, for example, students are expected to challenge the literature. “The course encouraged us to question institutions, authorship, and power, while still staying connected to how the art world actually functions,” Chung says. The same spirit carries across disciplines. On the BA Fine Art and History of Art programme, students work between practice and theory at the same time, moving fluidly between making and thinking. Kaina Liu , who studied the programme, found that the approach opened up new possibilities. “This approach ensures that my practice is not confined to the studio but extends into research-led projects and curatorial work,” he says. Whether you are studying art, psychology, business or any other programme, the learning at Goldsmiths is personal, rooted in real human experience and built around developing an independent voice. The strength of those subjects is reflected in their global recognition. The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 place four of Goldsmiths’ academic subjects in the top 50 worldwide, with Communication and Media Studies ranked 18th, Art and Design ranked 26th, and Performing Arts and History of Art also featured. Behind those rankings are academics who are actively shaping their fields: nearly four-fifths of Goldsmiths’ research has been rated world-leading or internationally excellent by the Research Excellence Framework 2021. “The lecturers at Goldsmiths are so passionate, not just in their lectures, but in providing support so you can understand the lecture content,” says Yoongi Kim , who graduated from the BSc Marketing programme in 2025. According to the 2022 Graduate Outcomes Survey , 80% of Goldsmiths undergraduates move into highly skilled work or further study after graduating. For Chung, the path from graduation led to a role at Seoul Auction, working across curatorial and business strategy, before she went on to found YRY Pacific, a practice spanning art advisory, cultural projects and research-led initiatives that connect contemporary art with technology. “Goldsmiths shaped how I think and work,” she says. “It gave me the confidence to navigate between academic research and professional practice, and to move comfortably between different countries and roles. The experience continues to influence how I approach my career today.” London is a big part of that experience. The campus sits in a neighbourhood packed with independent galleries, music venues and artists’ studios in south-east London, 10 minutes from the city centre. With students from over 130 countries all based on one campus, the community is as diverse and stimulating as the city surrounding it. London itself is voted the world’s best student city by QS Best Student Cities 2025. If you are studying art, media, performance, or business, the city will be part of your education. “Living in London while studying was an adventure in itself,” says Lucy Domachowski , who graduated in 2017. “The vibrant culture and diverse opportunities shaped my perspective and professional skills.” Learn more about Goldsmiths, University of London.
