Greece joins ITU spectrum monitoring network
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has expanded its global network of space radio monitoring stations through a cooperation agreement with Greece’s regulator, the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT). The agreement strengthens international cooperation to help investigate and resolve harmful interference cases affecting space services. EETT’s recently inaugurated Satellite Communications Spectrum Monitoring Station meets the latest technical standards for satellite spectrum monitoring and transmitter geolocation. The fixed monitoring station, located in Greece’s Attica region, is equipped with antenna systems operating across the L, S, C, Ku and Ka frequency bands, specialized transmitter geolocation equipment, and advanced systems for recording and analysing the data collected. Two control centres – one on site and another at EETT’s central offices – feature autonomous power supply, secure telecommunications links, and integrated security systems that enable fully remote operation. What the new station provides The station strengthens Greece’s satellite spectrum monitoring capacity at the national and wider Euro-Mediterranean levels. It will help detect unlicensed or technically non‑compliant radio emissions, locate their sources, and support the investigation and resolution of harmful interference cases in a timely manner. Monitoring capabilities around the globe contribute to the efficient and transparent use of satellite frequencies, a limited and valuable shared resource, in line with international regulations. “Expanding ITU’s international network of space monitoring stations is essential to safeguarding the efficient and interference‑free use of satellite frequencies,” said Mario Maniewicz, Director of the ITU Radiocommunication Bureau. “Cooperation with Greece strengthens our collective capacity to support countries and administrations worldwide in identifying and resolving harmful interference affecting space services.” EETT will conduct measurements under the memorandum of understanding signed in May, helping the organization safeguard space services worldwide. The new station is also included in ITU’s List of International Monitoring Stations (List VIII). Why cooperation matters For Professor Dimitris Varoutas, Chairman of EETT, the station’s inclusion in the international framework reflects Greece’s commitment to transparent and reliable spectrum management. “Through cooperation with ITU, Greece contributes to the protection of satellite communications at national and international levels”, he said. Expanding cooperation with national administrations reflects ITU’s mandate to ensure efficient and interference‑free radiocommunication services – including satellite systems – through coordinated monitoring and technical collaboration.
