Hadi says Hamzah Zainudin to resume role as Opposition Leader
KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Larut MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin will return as Opposition Leader just two months after relinquishing the post, PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang announced today. Speaking at the Reset convention in Tanah Merah, Kelantan, Hadi said PAS had consulted lawmakers from within the party as well as MPs aligned with Hamzah before reaching the decision. “We sought the views of MPs, not just PAS. Therefore, PAS has agreed to appoint Hamzah as Opposition Leader,” he was quoted as saying by FMT. Hadi also announced that Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar would remain chairman of Perikatan Nasional (PN). According to FMT, Hadi said PAS had taken into account the views of lawmakers aligned with Hamzah, including 13 MPs who continue to sit with Bersatu. “PAS has also decided to maintain Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar as Perikatan Nasional chairman,” Hadi said. Ahmad Samsuri was named Opposition Leader following PN’s supreme council meeting on May 16. Hamzah had relinquished the role after being expelled from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, before Samsuri succeeded him as Opposition Leader. Samsuri, who serves as PAS vice-president and Terengganu menteri besar, assumed the PN chairmanship in February after Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin stepped aside from the position.
