Initial teachers get $5,000 bonus in NT schools
The first recipients of a scholarship designed to attract beginning teachers to Northern Territory schools have been announced. The ‘teach local’ scholarships for those studying teaching offer $5,000 per year of their degree, a part-time job as a classroom support assistant in an NT public school while studying, and a guaranteed job when they graduate. Ten applicants were successful in the scholarship ’ s first year, including three school leavers, one mid-career changer and six classroom-support teachers. Eight are based in Darwin and two are in Alice Springs. The funds aim to attract beginning teachers from the NT to teach in local schools, and to attract interstate university students to move to the Territory after they graduate to help workforce shortages. Education Minister Jo Hersey said the NT has a lifestyle that “doesn't compare to anywhere else.” “Friday you’ll be teaching students in the classroom, 24 hours later and you could be splashing in a waterfall in Kakadu, having laksa for breakfast on the beach, or exploring the West MacDonnell ranges,” she said. “To keep the Territory growing, we need to be able to keep and attract quality teachers into the years ahead, and the best way is to stop talented teachers going south to study and keep them here in the Territory.” Black-necked stork (Jabiru) bird in a billabong at Yellow River, Kakadu, Northern Territory. The program will run for four years, along with a ‘teach up north’ incentive, which offers 25 teachers-in-training a $5,000 incentive to complete their final placement in the NT if they commit to at least two years working in a government school.
