“KUALA LUMPUR, May 28 — Police have assured the public that security along the Malaysia-Thailand border in Kelantan remains under control despite a recent armed attack targeting Thai police officers in Pattani. According to Utusan Malaysia , Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said security at border entry points had been reinforced through round-the-clock monitoring and patrols to ensure no threats could compromise national sovereignty. He said police remained on high alert over issues such as illegal immigration, cross-border crime and other potential security threats. “The level of control and security at the country’s borders has not changed. Existing measures remain in place to ensure the nation’s sovereignty is protected. “In Kelantan, we remain vigilant and cautious. Border controls are continuing as usual and so far, there have been no issues,” he told reporters after attending the MAIK Jama’ie Korban ceremony at the Sultan Ismail Petra Silver Jubilee Islamic Complex in Panji today. Mohd Yusoff was commenting on an attack by a group of armed men dressed as Muslim women on a vehicle carrying Thai police officers in Yarang, Pattani. He described the incident as isolated and said it had not affected security conditions along Malaysia’s border with Thailand. “It is not something that happens every day. We do not know the political issues there or why police were targeted. However, we do not have further information regarding the incident,” he said. The national daily previously reported that a female teacher was shot dead while cradling her two-month-old son during an armed attack outside a school in Yarang yesterday afternoon. The attack, which took place around 3.30pm, occurred while the victim, identified as Fatimah Yango, 35, was waiting with her husband — a police sergeant — and their infant to pick up another child from school.
