“KUANTAN, May 12 — The construction of Kuantan International Airport in Gebeng, here is expected to be completed in 2031, said Pahang Investment, Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Datuk Mohamad Nizar Najib. He said the project is currently undergoing finalisation on technical requirements, implementation structure and involvement of strategic investors. At the same time, he said its implementation is subject to compliance with strict technical requirements by federal agencies, including the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) and the Ministry of Transport, particularly involving aspects of regulation, safety and international flight operation standards. In this regard, he said the state government together with the developer were carrying out continuous engagement with all relevant agencies to ensure that every technical requirement was fully met before physical implementation proceeds. “The state government would like to emphasise that this project is being prudently, planned based on actual capabilities, with priority given to compliance with standards, investment viability and transparent governance,” he said. He said this when answering a question by Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (PN-Cheka) who wanted to know the latest status and obstacles to the construction of the airport which was earlier scheduled to operate this year. Mohamad Nizar said the proposed infrastructure development would be implemented through private financing and would not involve state and federal government funds and would be built on land owned by the Pahang Government Secretariat. Commenting further, he said the high-impact project required careful planning because the airport was built to operate for a period of 50 to 100 years in addition to having to comply with the standards of the agencies involved. “There is no rush because this is an asset costing billions of ringgit. From the state government’s perspective, this project is going smoothly and God willing there will be an interesting announcement by the developer soon,” he said. — Bernama
