Melaka police: Viral video edited, no escort of foreign nationals in Tanjung Minyak
MELAKA, June 1 — Police have denied claims that they were escorting several vehicles allegedly carrying foreign nationals in Tanjung Minyak here. Acting Melaka Tengah police chief Supt Halim Abas said the viral video in question was believed to have been edited by combining footage from two different locations. He said checks found that the footage showing a police four-wheel-drive vehicle exiting a junction was indeed recorded near Masjid Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakub in Tanjung Minyak. “The officer involved was not escorting any vehicles. It was merely a coincidence that several other vehicles exited the junction at the same time and appeared to be following behind. “The footage showing the foreign nationals’ vehicles is believed to have been recorded elsewhere and not in Tanjung Minyak as claimed in comments accompanying the viral video,” he said in a WhatsApp group message today. Halim said a closer look at the footage showed that the locations and surroundings in the two clips were different and were believed to have been combined through editing, causing confusion among the public. A 28-second video went viral on TikTok carrying the caption: “PDRM boleh tak rakyat dapatkan penjelasan kenapa warga asing ini semua perlukan pengiring?” (Can PDRM explain why all these foreign nationals need an escort?). — Bernama
