“KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 — Malaysia's Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a thunderstorm warning this evening covering wide swaths of Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia, cautioning residents to expect heavy rain, strong winds and lightning through 10.00 pm. The alert, released at 6.25 pm, places the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya under the warning, along with seven districts in Selangor: Kuala Selangor, Klang, Gombak, Petaling, Kuala Langat, Hulu Langat and Sepang. In Johor, the districts of Segamat, Kluang and Mersing are also affected. In East Malaysia, the warning extends to multiple areas in Sarawak, including Sri Aman, parts of Kapit (Song and Bukit Mabong), Bintulu, and several localities in Miri and Limbang. In Sabah, affected areas include districts in the Interior division — Nabawan, Keningau and Tambunan — as well as Ranau on the West Coast, parts of the Sandakan division including Tongod, Telupid, Beluran and Sandakan town, and Kota Marudu and Pitas in the Kudat division. MetMalaysia said the warning was triggered by indicators of thunderstorm activity with rainfall intensity exceeding 20 millimetres per hour, either already occurring or expected to persist for more than an hour. The department noted that thunderstorm warnings are short-duration advisories valid for no more than six hours from the time of issue. Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay indoors, avoid open spaces and tall trees, and keep clear of rivers and low-lying areas prone to flash flooding.
