OECD, Egypt eye second phase of cooperation as Cairo pursues full membership
Egypt is looking forward to fulfilling the requirements for membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) during the coming period, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Monday. Madbouly’s remarks came during a meeting with OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann on the sidelines of a high-level conference in the New Administrative Capital. The event, organised in cooperation with Egypt’s Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, marked the conclusion of the first phase of the Egypt-OECD Country Programme. Cormann expressed his anticipation for Egypt to join the organisation as a member and affirmed his commitment to coordinating with Cairo in this regard. The secretary-general praised the structural reforms undertaken by Egypt, noting that they have enabled the country to confront the economic repercussions of ongoing regional developments, and he stressed the importance of maintaining the current momentum in bilateral relations. During the meeting, Madbouly emphasised the importance Egypt attaches to the organisation’s work. He noted that this close cooperation is reflected in Egypt’s involvement in several OECD committees, its membership in the organisation’s Development Centre, and its co-chairmanship of the MENA-OECD Initiative. Welcoming the completion of the Country Programme’s first phase, Madbouly described it as a supporting pillar for national structural economic reforms and Egypt’s Vision 2030 for sustainable development. These efforts, he stated, contribute to improving the performance of the Egyptian economy and enhancing its resilience in the face of international and regional economic crises. The prime minister also expressed his desire to continue cooperation by launching a second phase of the programme. Furthermore, Madbouly welcomed Egypt’s inclusion as a “participant” in the OECD’s Committee on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and Entrepreneurship. Highlighting Egypt’s co-chairmanship of the MENA-OECD Initiative for the 2026-2030 period, the prime minister stated a desire to continue coordination with the organisation’s secretariat to develop the initiative’s programmes and mechanisms. This coordination aims to meet the development priorities of the region’s countries and enhance the resilience of their economies, particularly given the economic fallout from the current regional escalation. The meeting was also attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Planning and Economic Development Ahmed Rostom, and several OECD officials. Abdelatty expressed his appreciation for the close cooperation between Egypt and the organisation. He stated that the Country Programme has served as a pillar for national structural economic reforms, contributing to the strengthening of the Egyptian economy and the achievement of positive growth rates despite geopolitical challenges and successive global economic crises. Meanwhile, Rostom commended the collaboration with the OECD, confirming that coordination with the organisation will continue in the coming period, particularly through various initiatives and memberships in different OECD committees.
