KUANTAN, May 12 — The Pahang government has approved and is implementing 18 flood mitigation projects across the state involving a total cost of RM3.184 billion. According to Sinar Harian , Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said the large-scale projects are being carried out under the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK-12) and 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13). He reportedly said that 11 of the projects have already started on-site construction, six are still at the design stage, while one has been approved under the First Rolling Plan of RMK-13. “Among the projects currently being actively implemented are RTB Bandar Pekan, the Integrated River Basin Development (PLSB) Sungai Kuantan, as well as RTB Sungai Semantan in Temerloh. “Other locations also involve areas in Bera, Raub, Bentong, Lipis, Sungai Jempol and Sungai Luit,” he was quoted as saying that Pahang state legislative assembly sitting at Wisma Sri Pahang today. He was replying to a question from V. Arumugam (BN-Sabai) on the progress and implementation status of RTB projects across Pahang. In response to a supplementary question on RTB Sungai Bentong, Wan Rosdy said the project, which began in November 2025, is expected to be completed by November 2029. “Insya-Allah, if everything goes smoothly, with the selection of a good contractor and no external factors beyond our control. “The scope includes river deepening works to improve water flow, construction of flood walls, riverbank strengthening, as well as upgrading of dams in Repas Baru and the old areas in Perting and Lebu. “I am confident it will reduce flood risk in the area,” he was quoted as saying. On the effectiveness of existing projects, Wan Rosdy said RTB implementation has proven successful in reducing flood impact in identified hotspot areas. “Previously, we saw frequent major floods in these areas, but now the impact has been minimised, and this is proof of its effectiveness. “So far, six flood mitigation projects in Pahang have been completed, including Bandar Maran Phase 1, PLSB Sungai Kuantan Phase 2, and RTB Lembah Bertam in Cameron Highlands, completed between 2020 and 2024,” he said. He added that RTB Bandar Pekan Phase 2, involving river embankment works along Sungai Pahang and upgrading of the south embankment of Parit Utama Sungai Air Hitam, was completed in 2018. “Since then, we have not heard of major floods in Pekan. “A clear example is Sungai Isap, completed in 2011, which has successfully reduced flood risk and no longer experiences major flooding,” he reportedly said. Wan Rosdy said the Integrated River Basin Development (PLSB) Sungai Kuantan project is currently ahead of schedule at 56.65 per cent completion.
