“A review of the national Teacher Standards starts this month, running to February next year, after calls from key stakeholders for them to be updated. The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), the body responsible for promoting excellence in teaching and school leadership, will run the review. The evaluation will aim to make sure new standards “remain relevant, evidence-informed, and aligned with a contemporary understanding of effective practice,” AITSL chief Tim Bullard said. The request for review came from both state and federal education ministers off the back of the Education Workforce Roundtable, convened by the federal government in September 2025. AITSL will also look at the Principal Standards . Consultation will take place in two phases, one in June and the second in August. Initially, teachers will be asked to share their views through an online survey, with phase two following the release of a consultation paper that the industry will be able to respond to via survey or written submissions. AITSL is encouraging as many stakeholders as possible to take part in the consultation phases. “ Your perspective as a teacher or leader is central to understanding how the Teacher Standards are working in practice. Contributing to the consultations helps ensure the review reflects the expertise of the profession and the realities of different educational contexts.” For more information go to the AITSL website or subscribe to its newsletter.
