Suspects with drug records arrested in Ipoh after viral Telekom cable theft video surfaces
IPOH, June 2 — Police have arrested two men suspected of attempting to steal Telekom Malaysia cables in Taman Rapat Setia Baru here, after a video of the incident went viral on social media. Ipoh police chief ACP Muhammad Najib Hamzah said the suspects, aged 34 and 38, were arrested around 1am yesterday at a restaurant in Bercham. “Yesterday, police detected a viral video on X showing two suspicious men opening a Telekom Malaysia distribution box (DB) near a house in Taman Rapat Setia Baru. “No cables were stolen, but there were clear signs of the DB box having been opened and rummaged through,” he said in a statement. Background checks revealed that one suspect has a prior criminal record and seven drug-related records, while the other has three criminal records, he said. Police also seized a red Proton Persona believed to have been used during the incident, along with several other items, for investigation under Section 379/511 of the Penal Code for attempted theft. “The Ipoh district police thank the public for coming forward with information. Anyone with details on criminal activities can report it to the Ipoh District Police Headquarters at 05-2451500 or any nearby police station,” he said. — Bernama
