“KUALA LUMPUR, May 21 — Two men were killed when a two‑metre riverbank embankment collapsed while they were believed to be mining for gold at a stream in the Jerimbong oil palm plantation in Jeli last night. The incident occurred at about 8.20pm, and one other man reportedly survived, according to a report by Sinar Harian. Jeli Fire and Rescue Station chief Adni Ibrahim said his team received an emergency call about victims buried under soil before firefighters were deployed to the scene. He said access to the plantation was difficult because fire engines could not enter the narrow route. “Operations had to use a Hilux pickup truck to reach the location,” he said. He said the search began at 9.20pm and firefighters confirmed that two victims were buried under the collapsed embankment. He said the first victim was found at 9.25pm and the second at 11.18pm. He added that the operation ended at 11.40pm. Both men, believed to be in their 30s, were confirmed dead at the scene. Nine firefighters from the Jeli station were involved, supported by an FRT engine, an EMRS unit and an RRV vehicle.
