The findings will be discussed by an expert panel including Dr Jo Saxton CBE (UCAS), Becca Hayhurst (Unite Students), Tuely Robins (StudentCrowd) and Favour Samuel (Incoming NUS England President), chaired by HEPI’s Charlotte Armstrong . First launched in 2022, the Index systematically tracks university applicants’ attitudes each year, asking students about their lives before university and offering UK higher education institutions an indicator of what to expect when students arrive in the autumn. Attendees will gain early insight into the attitudes, expectations and preparedness of the next cohort of students, as the survey covers themes including: finance, social, community, wellbeing, resilience, learning, employment, independence and sustainability. HEPI / Kaplan / London Economics Webinar: The economic costs and benefits of international students Online | 12 pm – 1 pm | 9th July 2026 Join HEPI, Kaplan and London Economics for the launch of major new research examining the economic costs and benefits of international students across the UK. The webinar will be chaired by HEPI’s Rose Stephenson . The research provides the latest assessment of the economic impact of international students across the UK, covering both the benefits they bring and the public costs associated with their presence. For the first time, the analysis uses students’ actual residential locations rather than proxy measures, enabling a more accurate picture of their economic impact at parliamentary constituency level. As debates around international student recruitment continue to shape higher education policy, this webinar offers a timely opportunity to explore the latest evidence and what it means for universities, local communities and policymakers.
