Associate Professor Vinicius Rosa receives global award for AI-driven biomaterials research
Associate Professor Vinicius Rosa from the Faculty of Dentistry at NUS has received the IADR Innovation in Oral Care Award conferred by the International Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research and Haleon. The award, presented at the IADR General Session in San Diego in March 2026, recognises his work on using artificial intelligence (AI) to design and test biomaterials that better replicate the behaviour of human tissues. This advancement paves the way for safer, more effective, and more affordable dental care that reaches patients faster. The IADR Innovation in Oral Care Award honours research with strong potential to improve oral health outcomes at the population level. Assoc Prof Rosa’s work addresses a key limitation in biomedical science, where materials are typically tested in simplified laboratory systems that do not accurately predict real-world performance. Going forward, his team are combining developing hydrogel-based systems to create dynamic laboratory models that mimic human tissue and change over time. This approach allows treatments to be tested under more realistic conditions earlier in development, which could improve reliability, reduce trial-and-error experimentation, and lower reliance on animal testing across healthcare applications.
