“Strikes rock Gaza on Eid al-Adha as Israeli ceasefire violations top 3,000 Submitted by MEE staff on Wed, 05/27/2026 - 12:23 Deaths reported overnight as Gaza prepared for Islamic holiday Palestinians perform morning prayers marking the start of Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice, on a heavily damaged street in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, on 17 May 2026 (Bashar Taleb / AFP) Off As Palestinians in Gaza celebrated Eid al-Adha, Israel continued to launch strikes on the besieged enclave, with authorities saying ceasefire violations have topped 3,000. An overnight strike on a residential building in al-Rimal neighbourhood, west of Gaza City, has so far left six people dead, according to Al Jazeera. Israel says they killed Mohammed Odeh, the head of Hamas's armed wing, who succeeded the former chief Izz al-Din al-Haddad in mid-May. Hamas has yet to officialy confirm the news, which came on the first day of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha. However, a Hamas source told AFP that Odeh's wife and two children were also killed in the air strike, and that a funeral procession would take place on Wednesday in Gaza City. Since a nominal ceasefire agreement came into effect in October, hundreds of Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes. According to the Gaza Government Media Office, Israel has committed 3,005 violations so far. "These violations have ranged from bombings and direct targeting of civilians to the destruction of entire residential areas, repeated gunfire and incursions into residential zones," the media office said in a statement on Wednesday. As a result, over 910 civilians have been killed, with 2,747 others left wounded. Moreover, 82 people were abducted and arrested by Israeli forces during this period. Aid continues to be stifled by Israeli restrictions, with more than 64 percent of relief denied entry into the territory. This includes food, water, medicine, fuel and other humanitarian necessities. Local media citing medical sources reported the death of more than a dozen people over the past 24 hours. Israel launched strikes east of Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip at dawn on Wednesday, while Israeli artillery shelling was also reported in Khan Younis, south of the territory.
