2026 Waseda University Presidential Candidate Election Waseda University will hold an election to select a candidate for the next University President, following the expiration of the last term of our current President Aiji Tanaka (September 20, 2026). The election results will be announced on the University’s website around June 3rd. Please note that this election is merely a procedure for selecting a “candidate” for the next president, and the election results do not determine who will become the next president. The next president will be selected at the Board of Trustees meeting scheduled for September 21st. Procedures for Selecting the Next University President In accordance with the amendment of the Private School Act on April 1, 2025, the University has changed its procedures for selecting the president from the previous “Presidential Election” system to a system in which a “Presidential Candidate” is selected through the “Presidential Candidate Election.” After the Presidential Candidate Election is held, the External Advisory Board , which is the body that selects the University’s vice presidents , will include the Presidential Candidate selected in the Presidential Candidate Election as a v ice president candidate in the selection process for vice presidents. The vice presidents selected by the External Advisory Board will convene as the Board of Trustees on September 21, 2026, and will select the president from among themselves, taking into full consideration the results of the Presidential Candidate Election.
