Johor polls: Teo Nie Ching warns of fake DAP posters aimed at spooking voters
KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — The public is urged not to be influenced by smear tactics and false information, including the manipulation of posters involving potential DAP candidates for the Johor state election. Johor DAP chairman Teo Nie Ching said certain parties had deliberately altered the posters, portraying the potential candidates as Muslim women with improperly worn headscarves. She said the act was intended to instil fear among non-Malay voters, particularly the Chinese community, and to discourage them from voting for Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the Johor state election. “DAP respects all religions and understands that the headscarf, as part of Muslim women’s attire, should never be trivialised. The dirty tactics of altering these posters are despicable acts that must be rejected,” she said in a Facebook post yesterday. The Wanita DAP chief stressed that the party has always championed the rights of all Malaysians, irrespective of race, background, region, religion or gender. The Deputy Communications Minister also said the attempt to tarnish DAP’s image in such a manner not only reflected negative intentions towards the party but also appeared to show a disregard for women. “Hopefully, voters of all races will reject this act. Let us all choose harmony, unity and peace,” she said. The Election Commission has set June 27 as nomination day for the Johor state election and July 11 as polling day, following the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly on June 1. Johor has 56 state seats, with Barisan Nasional (BN) holding 40 seats before the dissolution, followed by PH with 12, Perikatan Nasional (PN) with three, and Muda with one. — Bernama

‘Wait for official statement’: PAS says no decision yet on Perikatan developments
KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — PAS has not reached any decision on the latest developments in Perikatan Nasional (PN), its information chief said today. Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said various issues, including current developments within PN, were discussed during the party meeting, but no announcement would be made at this stage, Harian Metro reported. “All decisions will be announced through a media statement. So there is nothing to announce from this meeting for now,” he told reporters after attending an opposition meeting yesterday. He said several more internal discussions would be held before any decision is finalised. Responding to comments by Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Tuesday, Ahmad Fadhli said all parties have the right to contest in a democratic system. “In this democratic country, all parties can contest,” he said. However, he added that any party wishing to use the PN logo must obtain the signature of the PN chairman, as required in the letter to the Election Commission. He said the possibility of clashes between parties is not unusual if negotiations fail to reach consensus. “In a democracy, we are ready to face anyone if there are no prior negotiations. “If consensus fails, clashes may happen. Consensus may succeed or fail. “There is still time, but if there is a desire to contest, all parties can contest,” he said. He also rejected suggestions that his remarks on contest rights would worsen ties between PAS and Bersatu. “I don’t think it worsens the situation. We have faced various parties before and it was not a problem,” he said. Ahmad Fadhli also confirmed that issues involving Bersatu and PN were among matters discussed in the meeting, as part of current political developments. “We always discuss current issues because this is a political party meeting, not a Maghrib lecture. “Issues about Bersatu, PN and others are discussed from time to time,” he said. He also confirmed that the PAS president chaired the meeting held earlier in the day.

Also present were Beluran MP Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee, Indera Mahkota MP Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah and Masjid Tanah MP Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, reported Sinar Harian . Several MPs approached by reporters declined to comment on the matters being discussed at the meeting, which is chaired by Perikatan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar. Earlier, Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said the meeting was expected to cover a range of current political developments, including issues surrounding Perikatan Nasional. He said a media statement would be issued after the meeting and that no specific announcement was expected for now. “We will issue a media statement. So, there is nothing to announce at this stage,” he said. Asked whether MPs from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia were attending, the PAS information chief said the meeting was only open to those who had received special invitations. He said he could not confirm whether Bersatu MPs were among those taking part. “That is uncertain. I was also invited by the secretariat to attend tonight,” he said yesterday. Meanwhile, Jerantut MP Khairil Nizam Khirudin said the issues affecting Perikatan Nasional were likely to be among the topics discussed, although that would depend on the agenda set by the meeting chairman. “All matters can be discussed and it is up to the chairman of the meeting,” he said.

Anwar: International engagement key to strengthening understanding between nations

Speaking after attending a gala dinner hosted by President Vladimir Putin at the Asean-Russia Commemorative Summit, Anwar said the event provided an opportunity to foster closer ties among participating leaders. “The event not only showcased Russia’s rich culture, history and heritage, but also served as an important platform to strengthen friendship and exchange views with fellow leaders in attendance,” he said. Anwar, Putin discuss energy security and expanding trade in local currencies
KAZAN, June 18 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed various aspects of bilateral cooperation, including the potential to strengthen ties in the energy sector, one of the strategic areas for both countries. In a statement issued after the meeting, Malaysia’s Prime Minister’s Office said Anwar and Putin also discussed efforts to expand economic cooperation, including Malaysia’s appreciation of Russia’s commitment to long-term cooperation in energy and oil supplies. “They also exchanged views on opportunities to strengthen cooperation in new technologies, cybersecurity, digitalisation, artificial intelligence (AI), modern agriculture and pharmaceuticals,” according to the statement. The discussions also covered efforts to facilitate the movement of people through visa liberalisation, as well as exploring mechanisms to expand bilateral trade and investment using local currencies, namely the ringgit and the ruble. “The Madani government will continue to take strategic and proactive measures to strengthen the country’s energy security, including through international cooperation that can ensure the stability, continuity and resilience of energy supplies for the benefit of the people and the nation’s prosperity,” it said. Anwar thanks Putin for backing Malaysia-Russia energy cooperation, Petronas
KAZAN, June 18 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed appreciation to Russian President Vladimir Putin for Russia’s support in strengthening energy cooperation with Malaysia, especially Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas). Anwar said bilateral mechanisms between Malaysia and Russia had expanded across various fields, including trade, investment, the halal economy and finance. Besides this, Malaysia is also close to finalising visa liberalisation arrangements with Russia, which would further facilitate exchanges and cooperation between the two countries, he said in his opening remarks at the bilateral meeting with Putin here today. Russia is aiming to abolish visa requirements for citizens of Malaysia, Indonesia and Kuwait this year. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said that the Russian Foreign Ministry would step up efforts to finalise and coordinate the relevant agreements. He also thanked Putin for Russia’s support, noting that Petronas had engaged with Russian counterparts and companies to advance collaboration in the sector. “You have given fantastic support. Thank you very much. Petronas was here with your counterpart (Rosneft). (It also had meetings) with some of the other companies here,” said Anwar. PJSC Rosneft Oil Company is Russia’s largest integrated energy corporation and one of the largest public oil and gas companies globally, specialising in hydrocarbon exploration, production, refining, and the sale of petroleum products. Headquartered in Moscow, the company accounts for roughly 40 per cent of Russia’s total oil production. In April, Anwar had said that Petronas would negotiate with Russia to secure sufficient oil supplies for domestic needs and that Putrajaya’s good relations with Moscow place the country in a favourable position to pursue such negotiations. The Prime Minister said Malaysia greatly appreciated Putin’s commitment to enhancing energy cooperation and the support extended during the energy crisis. He also expressed hope that Russia would continue to support efforts in other areas, such as improving air connectivity between Malaysia and Russian cities, including Moscow and Kazan, to boost tourism, trade and people-to-people links. Anwar said both countries were exploring cooperation in the halal economy and finance while discussions on trade and investment continued to progress positively. In 2024, total Asean-Russia trade amounted to US$18.1 billion, while Russian foreign direct investment in Asean was recorded at RM367.90 million (US$92.97 million). For Malaysia, Russia was the country’s ninth-largest trading partner among European nations in 2025, with total trade valued at RM8.72 billion (US$2.04 billion). Malaysia’s main exports to Russia comprise electrical and electronic products, machinery, equipment and parts, as well as processed food products. Its principal imports from Russia include petroleum products, minerals, chemicals and chemical-based products. Putin: Russia, Malaysia well placed to deepen ties as 60th anniversary nears
KAZAN, June 18 — Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia and Malaysia have established a strong foundation for further expanding bilateral cooperation as both countries approach the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year. Speaking during a meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on the sidelines of the Asean-Russia Commemorative Summit here on Wednesday night, Putin said the two countries were approaching the milestone with “substantive positive experience” in bilateral engagement. “Next year will mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries. We are approaching this date with substantive positive experience of mutual and official cooperation, and we have established serious coordination towards further expansion,” he said. Putin noted that Russia and Malaysia maintain regular contacts through their ministries, agencies and parliaments, while an intergovernmental commission on economic, scientific, technical and cultural cooperation is responsible for the practical implementation of joint projects. He said bilateral trade has continued to grow, with trade between the two countries increasing by 12.9 per cent in 2025. “In 2025, the natural trade between our countries has increased by 12.9 per cent, which is a good result,” he said, adding that Russia also attaches great importance to cooperation with Malaysia in education, science and technology, tourism, as well as humanitarian ties. He welcomed Malaysia’s support for strengthening the strategic partnership between Russia and Asean, noting that the first summit-level meeting between Russia and Asean was held in Malaysia in 2005. “Last year, your country chaired Asean and we welcome that Malaysia maintains and supports the development of the first strategic partnership between Russia and Asean,” he said. Putin also described Malaysia as a long-standing global partner of Russia and said that cooperation between the two countries has consistently been based on the principles of mutual respect and consideration of interests. Referring to his previous engagements with Malaysian leaders, Putin recalled meeting Anwar in Malaysia and conveyed his best wishes to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia. “I kindly ask you to send my best wishes to him,” he said. —Bernama

Korea to apply zero tariffs on LNG, LPG under quota scheme to tackle inflation
Korea plans to apply zero tariff rates on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) within quotas in the second half of 2026 as the country seeks to tame inflation amid lingering global energy price volatility, the finance ministry said Thursday. The Ministry of Finance and Economy said tariff rates on LNG, LPG and crude oil used for the production of LPG will be lowered to zero in the second half, noting the measure is expected to help stabilize consumer prices by lowering utility and transportation costs. The government earlier planned to lower tariff rates on LNG to 2 percent in the third quarter and 1 percent in the fourth quarter while dropping those on LPG and crude used for LPG production to 1 percent in the second half. "We conduct commissioned research every year on whether the tariff-rate quota system puts downward pressure on consumer prices, and the findings consistently show that it has had such an effect in the energy sector," a ministry official said. Korea's consumer prices rose 3.1 percent in May from a year earlier amid global energy price volatility

As a first step, he indicated that Tehran will reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while Washington immediately lifts its naval blockade on the waterway. "Pakistan with the support of co-mediator State of Qatar will host the official ceremony as scheduled on 19 June 2026 in Switzerland, to commemorate this landmark event and commence with the technical level talks," he added. "May this Memorandum of Understanding serve as an enduring foundation for greater understanding, mutual respect and shared prosperity for the complete region." I am honoured to announce that the historic ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding’ has been electronically signed today between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
