Korea shares firefighting expertise to bolster ties with Southeast Asian nations

Korea is seeking to turn its emergency response expertise into a tool of "disaster diplomacy," dispatching its top fire official to Southeast Asia this week to market the country’s high-tech dispatch systems and firefighting equipment. The National Fire Agency said Tuesday that its commissioner, Kim Seung-ryong, is embarking on a five-day mission to Indonesia and Vietnam. The trip, described by officials as "sales diplomacy for firefighting," aims to capitalize on the region’s growing need for sophisticated disaster management as rapid urbanization and climate change complicate the risks of industrial growth. A centerpiece of the mission is the potential export of Korea’s “119” system — an integrated, IT-driven emergency reporting and dispatch platform. In Indonesia, officials are expected to discuss a pilot program for the system, which coordinates emergency responses through a centralized digital interface. Indonesian authorities have reportedly expressed a keen interest in the model as a way to modernize their own fragmented dispatch capabilities. The outreach also carries

Lee slams 'predatory' act of financial institutions

President Lee Jae Myung on Tuesday slammed a bad bank in South Korea for their "predatory" act of collecting borrowers' debts that are long overdue. Quoting a news report about a low-income earner's struggle in repaying debts and interests to a South Korean bad bank named "Sangnoksu" on his X account, Lee said that the institution had crossed the line by failing to participate in the government-led debt relief program. Instead, the bad bank, jointly owned by South Korean banks and credit card co

‘What is so difficult?’: Socso CEO questions seven gig platforms yet to submit details for automatic contributions

AMPANG, May 12 — Seven of the 14 gig service platform providers have yet to submit their workers’ details to the Social Security Organisation (Socso), delaying the rollout of automatic contributions under the Gig Workers Act 2025. According to a report in Berita Harian , Socso chief executive officer Datuk Seri Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed said the other half of platform providers had completed the worker registration process as of yesterday. Those named as having completed the process were AirAsia Ride Sdn Bhd, Kiddocare, Eternal Meteor Sdn Bhd (GoGet), ShopeeFood Malaysia, Troopers Innovation Sdn Bhd, Fastgig Sdn Bhd and Delivery Hero Malaysia (Foodpanda) Sdn Bhd. However, he said only Fastgig Sdn Bhd had completed both worker registration and the automatic 1.25 per cent contribution process. “Only Fastgig Sdn Bhd has completed both processes, meaning gig workers serving through their platform have begun making Socso contributions automatically,” he was quoted as saying at the Ziarah Prihatin programme at an insured person’s home here today. Mohammed Azman reportedly questioned why the remaining seven platform providers had yet to provide their workers’ information, saying the delay made it difficult for Socso to assist gig workers in the event of accidents or deaths. “What is so difficult? What is their excuse? Is workers’ welfare not important?” he was quoted as saying. The Gig Workers Act 2025 came into force on March 31, requiring platform providers to register gig workers with Socso and implement automatic 1.25 per cent contributions through platform transactions. Mohammed Azman reportedly also said e-hailing driver Jailani Sapiih, 41, was eligible for Socso benefits after the car he was driving was allegedly hit by an intoxicated driver on the Maju Expressway (MEX) on April 23, killing a Bangladeshi passenger, despite his Lindung Kendiri contribution having expired before the incident. He said protection under the Gig Workers Act 2025, which came into force on March 31, still applied as Jailani’s platform confirmed he was carrying out e-hailing work at the time of the accident. Socso has reportedly processed RM1,230 in Temporary Disablement Benefit for Jailani’s 41 days of medical leave from April 23 to June 2, 2026, and provided rehabilitation aid including a wheelchair.
