Johor polls: Teo Nie Ching warns of fake DAP posters aimed at spooking voters

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — The public is urged not to be influenced by smear tactics and false information, including the manipulation of posters involving potential DAP candidates for the Johor state election. Johor DAP chairman Teo Nie Ching said certain parties had deliberately altered the posters, portraying the potential candidates as Muslim women with improperly worn headscarves. She said the act was intended to instil fear among non-Malay voters, particularly the Chinese community, and to discourage them from voting for Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the Johor state election. “DAP respects all religions and understands that the headscarf, as part of Muslim women’s attire, should never be trivialised. The dirty tactics of altering these posters are despicable acts that must be rejected,” she said in a Facebook post yesterday. The Wanita DAP chief stressed that the party has always championed the rights of all Malaysians, irrespective of race, background, region, religion or gender. The Deputy Communications Minister also said the attempt to tarnish DAP’s image in such a manner not only reflected negative intentions towards the party but also appeared to show a disregard for women. “Hopefully, voters of all races will reject this act. Let us all choose harmony, unity and peace,” she said. The Election Commission has set June 27 as nomination day for the Johor state election and July 11 as polling day, following the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly on June 1. Johor has 56 state seats, with Barisan Nasional (BN) holding 40 seats before the dissolution, followed by PH with 12, Perikatan Nasional (PN) with three, and Muda with one. — Bernama

لا تكتمل تجربة زيارة نيويورك بالوقوف عند ناطحات السحاب في مانهاتن أو استكشاف الأحياء التاريخية كالحي الصيني والإيطالي فحسب، بل إن الرحلة الحقيقية للزائر العربي والمغاربي تقوده نحو حي “أستوريا” العريق في منطقة كوينز، وتحديدا إلى شارع “ستاينواي” الرئيسي. هذا الشارع الذي يمتد على مسافة 3.86 كيلومترا ليربط شمال المدينة بجنوبها، يمكن الوصول إليه بيسر عبر خطوط مترو الأنفاق أو الحافلة، وقد تحول على مر العقود من ضاحية صناعية ارتبطت بالمصانع الألمانية في القرن التاسع عشر، إلى شريان تجاري نابض وجزء أساسي لـ”أستوريا ستاينواي”، مشكّلا وطنا بدقائق تفاصيله للمهاجرين الباحثين عن دفء الهوية في بلاد الغربة، وهو ما تؤكده الذاكرة الحية للزوار الذين واكبوا الحي منذ أواخر القرن الماضي، حينما كان الشارع يعج بملامحه الأولى المليئة بالمحلات والمشاريع المغربية والمصرية على وجه الخصوص، قبل أن يتوسع ويصل إلى ما هو عليه اليوم. ويُعرف شارع ستاينواي اليوم في الأوساط النيويوركية بأنه “شارع العرب والمغاربيين”، حيث يرتكز النشاط التجاري والثقافي على المحلات الشرقية والمغاربية والمقاهي التي بدأت تتشكل ملامحها منذ أمد طويل مع افتتاح أول مطعم عربي في المنطقة. وتتجلى جغرافية الشارع كلوحة فسيفسائية تجمع التنوع العربي والمغاربي؛ فإلى جانب المقاهي المصرية واللبنانية الشهيرة، تبرز المحلات التجارية المغربية والتونسية والجزائرية، والمطاعم الآسيوية الحلال ومتاجر المعجنات الأردنية. كما يزخر الشارع بوكالات الأسفار العربية، ومكاتب المحاسبة والمحاماة، وعيادات الأطباء العرب، مما يجعله مركزا متكاملا يلبي كافة الاحتياجات اليومية للجالية، وتكتمل صورته الجمالية بعربات الأكل العربي التي تعرض أشهى الأطباق على نغمات أغاني فيروز وموسيقى الراي والدبكة. وما يمنح ستاينواي خصوصيته الفريدة في عمق حي أستوريا، هو تلك الأجواء الروحية والاجتماعية التي تعزز قيم الانتماء؛ إذ يتواجد في آخر الشارع “مسجد الإيمان” الذي يعد واحدا من أهم المعالم الإسلامية بمدينة نيويورك. ويتميز هذا المسجد برفع الأذان عند دخول وقت الصلاة، في مشهد مهيب يأسر قلوب المارة والزوار الذين يتوقفون لالتقاط مقاطع الفيديو للمسجد وللشارع الذي يتردد فيه صدى التكبيرات. وتتحول أرصفة الشارع ومحلاته، لا سيما تلك المتخصصة في بيع ملابس الزي الإسلامي، إلى ملتقى عائلي دافئ تفوح منه روائح التوابل الزكية وزيت الزيتون المغربي الأصيل، مما يمنح المهاجرين إحساسا حقيقيا بأنهم لم يغادروا عواصمهم الأم. وتصل الحركية الاجتماعية في الشارع إلى ذروتها خلال عطلة نهاية الأسبوع يومي السبت والأحد، حيث يشهد تجمعات عربية مكثفة لتبادل أطراف الحديث. ومع احتضان الولايات المتحدة وكندا والمكسيك فعاليات كأس العالم الجارية حاليا، تحولت المقاهي المزودة بأجهزة التلفاز ذات الشاشات الكبيرة إلى مناطق للمشجعين (Fun Zones) تضج بالحماس والإثارة ومتابعة المونديال. ويعيد هذا المشهد إلى الأذهان ذكريات تلاحم الجاليات في مونديال قطر 2022 حينما بصم المنتخب المغربي على مشاركة جد مشرفة، لتمتزج الفرحة مجددا اليوم بين جميع أبناء الجاليات العربية والمغاربية في تلاحم بهيج يثبت أن المغتربين جسد واحد في السراء والضراء. لا ينحصر التلاحم في حدود الشارع فحسب، بل يمتد ليشكل قوة حضور إيجابية للجالية العربية والمغاربية في الفعاليات الكبرى لمدينة نيويورك، مثل “ماراثون الخير السنوي”؛ بحيث يحرص أبناء الشارع على إدراج هذا الحدث في أجندتهم السنوية وتأكيد التواجد المكثف فيه لدعم الرياضيين القادمين من مختلف دول العالم، معتبرين هذه المشاركة قبلة تبرز للعالم مدى تضامنهم وتحضرهم. ورغم التحديات الاقتصادية والاجتماعية وضغوط الحياة في المهجر، يبقى شارع ستاينواي صامدا كإرث ثقافي حي ومجمع لكل الشعوب العربية التي تعيش في نيويورك والمدن المجاورة. ‘Wait for official statement’: PAS says no decision yet on Perikatan developments

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — PAS has not reached any decision on the latest developments in Perikatan Nasional (PN), its information chief said today. Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said various issues, including current developments within PN, were discussed during the party meeting, but no announcement would be made at this stage, Harian Metro reported. “All decisions will be announced through a media statement. So there is nothing to announce from this meeting for now,” he told reporters after attending an opposition meeting yesterday. He said several more internal discussions would be held before any decision is finalised. Responding to comments by Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Tuesday, Ahmad Fadhli said all parties have the right to contest in a democratic system. “In this democratic country, all parties can contest,” he said. However, he added that any party wishing to use the PN logo must obtain the signature of the PN chairman, as required in the letter to the Election Commission. He said the possibility of clashes between parties is not unusual if negotiations fail to reach consensus. “In a democracy, we are ready to face anyone if there are no prior negotiations. “If consensus fails, clashes may happen. Consensus may succeed or fail. “There is still time, but if there is a desire to contest, all parties can contest,” he said. He also rejected suggestions that his remarks on contest rights would worsen ties between PAS and Bersatu. “I don’t think it worsens the situation. We have faced various parties before and it was not a problem,” he said. Ahmad Fadhli also confirmed that issues involving Bersatu and PN were among matters discussed in the meeting, as part of current political developments. “We always discuss current issues because this is a political party meeting, not a Maghrib lecture. “Issues about Bersatu, PN and others are discussed from time to time,” he said. He also confirmed that the PAS president chaired the meeting held earlier in the day.
